KEYNOTE SPEAKER & MUSICIAN

DR. WINTLEY PHIPPS

Dr. Wintley Phipps was born in Trinidad, West Indies and raised in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.  He received a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Theology at Kingsway College, Huntsville, Alabama, and earned a Masters of Divinity Degree from AndrewsUniversity in Berrien Springs, Michigan.  Wintley has been the featured speaker and vocalist at many notable occasions, appearing before United States Presidents, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, President Nelson Mandela of South Africa, and he was chosen to perform at the inauguration of George W. Bush in January of 2005.

In 1998, Dr. Phipps founded and created the U.S. Dream Academy. This program targets children and youth-at-risk through community Family Learning Centers located in various states.  It provides mentoring, academic tutoring, and exposure to computers and the internet.  The academy has garnered recognition from former President Bill Clinton, and Oprah Winfrey, winning Oprah’s Angel Network Use Your Life Award.

He is the author of The Power Of A Dream and founder of Songs of Freedom Publishing Company and Coral Records Recording Company.  Dr. Phipps has appeared on Dr. Robert Schuller’s Hour of Power, Focus on the Family, and The Billy Graham Crusades.  He has served as senior pastor to several churches in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and is now Senior Pastor of the Palm BayChurch in Palm Bay, Florida.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

SUE THOMAS

Sue Thomas lost the ability to hear at the age of 18 months.   Despite various operations and experimental treatments, nothing could restore the hearing loss.  She learned to speak and lip read at Youngstown Hearing and SpeechCenter, then enrolled in public schools.  Following high school, Sue attended SpringfieldCollege in Springfield, Maine, and later pursued postgraduate study at CaseWestern ReserveUniversity in Cleveland, Ohio.  “I’ve worked all my life to function in the hearing world,” Sue says, noting that her hard work finally paid off when she was hired by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C.  Due to her superb ability to read lips, she became involved in undercover work.  Sue’s adventures with the F.B.I. have been dramatized in the original television series appropriately titled, Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye. 

Currently, Sue speaks nationally before civic, professional and church groups proclaiming the love and forgiveness of God, through His Son, Christ Jesus. She is interviewed regularly on television and radio, including Focus on the Family, Truth That Transforms, and The 700 Club. Aside from speaking she has authored a best selling autobiography, Silent Night, and is currently completing another book. Sue lives in Ohio with her golden retriever, when they are not on the road speaking.

KAREN COVELL

USC graduate, Karen Covell, is a television producer, Director of the Hollywood Prayer Network, and co-founder and producer for JC Productions, an independent television and music production company. She has had extensive experience producing TV specials and documentaries, including associate producer for Headliners & Legends with Matt Lauer, and co-producer for the television special America’s Throwaway Children, starring Dennis Franz and Danny Glover.

As the Director of the Hollywood Prayer Network, Karen also speaks and teaches around the country challenging Christian leaders and lay people to view Hollywood as the world’s most influential mission field and how to pray for the people in the entertainment industry. She is also a published co-author of two books, How To Talk About Jesus Without Freaking Out and TheDay I Met God. Karen is a member of the Producers Guild of America and a board member of the Biola University Entertainment Task Force.

She is married to her best pal Jim, a composer. They are the proud parents of two Wonder Boys – 17 year old Christopher and 13 year old Cameron.

CANON SUTTON

A graduate of HopeCollege, Reverend Canon Eugene Taylor Sutton earned the Master of Divinity degree from Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan, and has completed graduate studies at Princeton Theological Seminary in Theology and Communications in Preaching.

Throughout his ministry in parishes and academia, he has held teaching posts in at VanderbiltUniversityDivinitySchool in Tennessee, New Brunswick Theological Seminary in New Jersey, and General Theological Seminary in New York. In 1997, Canon Sutton co-founded Contemplative Outreach of Metropolitan Washington (COMW), an ecumenical network of churches and individuals in the Washington area committed to centering prayer and renewing the contemplative dimension of the gospel for daily living. An author of several articles on preaching and spirituality, he is a contributor to the book The Diversity of Centering Prayer.

Canon Sutton is Pastor and Director of the CathedralCenter for Prayer and Pilgrimage at Washington National Cathedral. He is an Episcopal priest and a frequent leader of ecumenical retreats and conferences on preaching, prayer, personal spirituality, and worship throughout the nation.
